Pediatrics Q & A

What is pediatrics?

Pediatric care is an aspect of family medicine that ensures the ongoing health of your child, beginning at birth through age 21. Your family doctor is an important part of your health care team and significant support for the overall health of your family.

Dr. Khalil and the team at Family Care offer services that serve the health and wellness of your child by:

  • Tracking development and growth
  • Identifying risk factors of disease
  • Preventing disease and injury
  • Detecting and treating disease early
  • Supporting a lifetime of healthy eating and activity
  • Building trust between parent, child, and doctor

Important aspects of ongoing pediatric care are regular immunizations and annual well-child visits.

What pediatric services are available?

Services that can support the health of your child throughout their lifetime include:

  • Well-child visit
  • Immunizations
  • Allergy testing
  • Asthma support
  • Special needs evaluation
  • Specialist referrals, if needed
  • Sports physicals
  • Same-day sick visits
  • Medication management
  • Weight control and nutrition counseling

Dr. Khalil can also be a significant supportive advisor for you if your child suffers from common childhood conditions, such as eczema, asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and food allergies.

How often is a well-child visit needed?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, well-child visits should start within 3-5 days after birth. A recommended schedule for well-child visits begins with visits every one to three months for the first year of life. These visits are also called well-baby visits and often coincide with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended childhood immunization schedule.

After a year, a well-child visit should take place at:

  • 15 months old
  • 18 months old
  • 24 months old
  • 30 months old
  • Three years old

Starting at four years old, well-child visits should be annual and include a physical exam, as well as developmental, behavioral, and learning assessments.

Dr. Khalil works closely with each child and parent. He makes recommendations for nurturing a healthy lifestyle and for improving any factors that may be placing your child at higher risk for disease or hindering their physical, developmental, or emotional growth.
